California: Day 1

January 28th, 2010

It’s been a year since I was last in the States (the American ones.) Every other time I’ve been here, I have been part of a group which included more experienced travelers than myself. This is my first time making my own way (especially with the driving). On the whole, it has been a fairly uneventful day, waiting in line at customs, checking in to a hotel, hunting for caffeine etc. I am, of course, somewhat sleep deprived and disoriented (who put the Sun on the wrong side?) which has so far, made for a fairly amusing day of feeling like a complete newbie in multiple ways. Here are a few things I have learned or realised today. They all seemed like monumental revelations at the time, however I claim jet-lag if anyone disputes this.

Load issues with Syntaxy

December 5th, 2009

A lot of people have noted that syntaxy is unresponsive or just really, really slow. This is due to the load which it has been getting, which is a good problem to have. It was maxing out both outgoing bandwidth because it would re-annotate all code regardless of whether it was exactly the same annotations it already had. This is now fixed but Syntaxy usually maxes out on incoming bandwidth within 4 hours of the quota being reset (this reset happens every 24h). Also, the cpu usage is being limited so even the requests that do get processed are being slow. The next step is to get my quota increased, since there isn’t much I can do to stop the incoming bandwidth maxing out.

If you want to use Syntaxy then please set up your own instance (it’s open source) and you will find much better performance. :) Then you can also pick your favourite colours for highlighting.

I’m an Auntie!

August 24th, 2009

I’m sure every doting aunt would say this about their niece, but little Abigail is the most adorable bub in the world. As evidence I present the following picture:

Big yawn for a big bub.

If just one cute picture of a newborn is not enough, read on!

Syntaxy is now open sourced!

July 18th, 2009

Just a quick heads up for anyone who was anxiously awaiting the code for Syntaxy, it’s now available as part of the google-wave-resources project, more specifically here. Now you can run your own Syntaxy with your own choice of colours for highlighting.

Skiing

July 13th, 2009

Just got back yesterday from a week of skiing! I had an awesomely fun week despite waking up every morning thinking “man, I really do not want to go skiing today.” It turns out that when you’re learning skiing is mostly sore muscles and feet, watching 8 year olds zoom past you and lots of lying in the snow laughing at how you fell over on the flat because you were relieved at getting down the steep part of the slope.

Photos posted here include the bruises on my leg which I am idiotically proud of, ‘Smiggin’ the little snowman that we built and some pictures of Pat walking over the crest of a steep hill after falling off the T-bar.
